How to choose exterior doors
- Match your architecture. Spanish revival/Mediterranean (Hancock Park, Pasadena, Beverly Hills) → hand-carved with iron speakeasy. Mid-century → flush walnut or white oak. Contemporary → modern slat or large flat panels. Traditional → classic mahogany. Style guide for Mediterranean →
- Single, double, or grand entrance? 36" single suits cottages. 60"–64" double suits homes 3,000+ sq ft. Estates go to oversized 72"+ with iron or hand-carved details.
- Wood, fiberglass, or iron? Solid wood is most premium and most period-correct. Fiberglass holds up best to coastal salt air and high sun. Iron makes a singular architectural statement. Iron buying guide →
- Always prehung for entries. Slab is fine for some interior swaps; for entries, the weather seal and structural alignment of a prehung unit pays for itself.
- Energy efficiency. Specify dual-pane glass on any door with significant glass area. Marine-grade weatherstripping for Newport Beach, Malibu, and other coastal addresses.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between an entry door and an exterior door?
"Entry door" usually refers to the front door specifically — the main public face of the home. "Exterior door" is broader — includes front entry plus back doors, patio doors, side garage entries, etc. All entry doors are exterior doors, but not all exterior doors are entries.
Are wooden entry doors okay for the LA climate?
Yes, with the right finish. LA's low humidity is friendly to solid wood. The risk is direct sun exposure on south- and west-facing entries — a marine-grade or UV-resistant stain holds up; cheap finishes fade in 2–3 years. For coastal OC (Newport, Malibu) we recommend solid wood with marine finish or fiberglass.
How heavy are iron doors?
A standard 36"×80" iron door is 200–300 lbs. Doubles run 400–500 lbs combined. Oversized French iron at 42"×96" can hit 350+ lbs single, 700+ lbs double. The rough opening must be reinforced with 2x6 minimum framing, and 4–5 ball-bearing hinges per door.
How long does an exterior door installation take?
Standard prehung exterior install is 2–4 hours per door for an experienced carpenter — slightly longer than interior because of weatherstripping and threshold alignment. Iron doors and oversized doubles run 4–6 hours and require two installers minimum.
Do you offer installation?
We don't install in-house — we partner with professional door installers we trust across LA and Orange County. We'll connect you with the right installer for your project, especially for iron or oversized doors that need specialty experience.
